According to the specifications outlined in the Pienta research, the pectin should have a "methoxylation rate" of no more than 10%. Increased methoxylation potentially reduces the pectin binding sites which bind with the receptor sites of aberrant cells. Products that are sold as "modified citrus pectin" which exceed the 10% methoxylation rate given by the Pienta research team do not conform to the study specifications nor do they match the products used in the clinical research.
Treated pectinic acid, sometimes referred to as "Fractionated Citrus Pectin", is manufactured under Patent #5,498,702 and was initially developed as an aspartame replacement.
