In this recipe, Radix Rehmanniae premannial preparata is sweet-slightly warm, pertains to the liver-kidney channel. Since the liver stores blood, and is the congenital of woman, kidney is the congenital root, when kidney yin is in deficiency, the ministerial fire would flaring up, and injure the Chong and Ren channels to push blood flowing astray, resulting in irregular menstruation, with massive hemorrhage. Radix Rehmanniae is an essential blood tonic and a main remedy for nourishing yin. Rhizoma Dioscorea is sweet-plain, capable of benefiting Qi-yin and spleen Qi. Both are used as monarchal ingredients. Cortex Eucommiae, Radix Dipsaci, Ramulus Visci are sweet and warm, pertain to the liver-kidney channels. Combined use of the above four strengthens the action of benefiting liver-kidney, regulating Chong-Ren channels and hemostasis, and are applied as ministerial ingredients. Fructus Schisandrae is sour, Concha Ostrea is salty-puckery. They increase the astringing capacity to benefit the kidney and liver. Radix Paeoniae alba is bitter-sour-sweet and slightly cold, pertains to the liver-spleen channels, capable of replenishing blood, regulating menstruation, astringing yin and softening the liver. Radix Sanguisorbae, Pollen Typhae are capable of cooling blood, arresting hemorrhage, resolving blood stasis and puckery, capable of astringing and arresting hemorrhage and pain. When applied with Radix Samguisorhae, the action of hemostasis is strengthened. The whole recipe is applied for benefiting kidney, astringing yin, consolidating the Chong channel, arresting bleeding.

Modern studies on pharmacodynamics show that Fructus Schisandrae excites the uterine smooth muscle, strengthens rhythmic contraction of smooth muscles of uterine and its tension. Radix Dipsaci decoction yields a stronger contraction action of the uterus in vitro in rabbit, manifesting increases of frequency, with high tension. Cortex Eucommiae, Radix Sanguisorbae, Pollen Typhae are blood static. Decoction of Cortex Eucommiae markedly shortens bleeding time for 42%. Its chlorogenic acid shortens the coagulation time and bleeding time. Radix Sanguisorbae or its powder shortens the coagulation and bleeding time in rabbit and mice. Experiments on coagulation time, prothrombin time and platelet aggregation, in addition to tannic acid, there might have other factors involved. It increases platelet count in rabbit, markedly shortened the coagulation time of blood. Experiments on coagulation time, prothrombin time and platelet aggregation in rat and mice show that 4 kinds of 70% alcohol extracts from Pollen Typhae all promote coagulation. It also acts on uterine smooth muscle. The non-pregnant uterus of guinea pig, mice, rat are more sensitive than pregnant womb, tetanic contraction may even occur. It also strengthens the contraction or tension of rat uterus after delivery.
