Summary of Modern studies on Toufengning (Clear Head & Neck Comfort™) Capsule

Chinese Use: Headache, lumbar spine pain, peripheral neuroparalysis.

Modern studies on pharmacodynamics reveal that this product yields the actions of analgesia, sedation, anti-inflammation, and antipyresis.

1.      Analgesia: This product yields rather satisfactory analgesic effect in mice induced by acetic acid and heat plate method. It exerts rapid effect, reach its peak in 15 min, then diminished gradually within 2~3 hrs. The effect reveals a quantity-effect relation.

2.      Sedation: This product in bag-immersion form yields marked synergistic action with sodium thiopenthol or sodium pentobarbital, shortens the latent period of right reflex. It also yields anesthetic action in mice with under threshold dosage of sodium pentobarbital, better action than its decoction form.

3.      Anti-inflammation: This product markedly inhibits the increased capillary permeability in the skin in rat or mice induced by dimethyl benzene, histamine and 5-hydroxy-tryptophane, and the increased permeability of blood vessel in abdominal cavity in mice induced by acetic acid. It also inhibits the claw edema of rat induced by albumen and carrageenin.

4.      Antipyresis: This product yields rather strong antipyretic action on feverish rat model induced by para-2, 4-dinitrophenol. The action is conspicuous after administration for 30 min and persists for over 2 hrs.

5.      Effect on blood flow to anoxic organ: This product obviously prolongs the time of death due to anoxic asphyxiation. Decapitated experiment shows that this product strengthens the capacity of tolerance to anoxia in animals.

Clinically, this product was commonly used in headache, pain of cervical vertebral disorder, and peripheral nerve paralysis.

1.      Headache: 20 cases of vascular headache were treated with this product. Results showed that 11 cases were cured; 8 cases, ameliorated; 1 case, ineffective. 168 cases of migraine were treated with Chuanxiong Chatiao powder, with 7 days as a therapeutic course for 3 courses, the total effective rate being 95.23%. 43 cases of stubborn vascular nervous headache were treated with this product. 11 cases were cured; 14 cases, markedly effective; 12 cases, ameliorated; 6 cases, ineffective. 54 cases of nervous headache were treated with Chuanxiong Chatiao powder with additives. Results showed that 16 cases were immediately cured; 21 cases, markedly effective; 14 cases, ameliorated. It was also reported that this product is indicated in stubborn eyebrow bone pain, severe headache and headache due to internal injury.

2.      Cervical spondylopathy: 60 cases were treated with this product, 2g t.i.d., for 2~3 months as a therapeutic course. Results showed that 27 cases were cured; 9 cases, markedly effective; 17, effective, the total effective rate being 88.33%.

3.      Peripheral nervous paralysis: 54 cases were treated by oral administration and acupoint topical application, with 5~36 days as a therapeutic course. 50 cases were cured; 3 cases, markedly effective; 1 case effective.

Others: 12 cases of acute frontal sinusitis were treated with 3~9 doses averaging 6 doses. 11 cases were cured; 1 case ameliorated. For nasal polyps, 23 cases were treated with 10g, t.i.d. with 21 days as a therapeutic course. Results showed that 21 cases were cured (disappearance of polyps, but with smelling disturbance), 1 case, ineffective (no change in polyps). This product also treats urticaria, rheumatic arthritis, premenstrual headache, inner ear vertigo (Meniere’s syndrome), allergic rhinitis, facial paralysis, and trigeminal neuralgia.
